£13,000 Compensation for Dominican Republic Holiday Illness

Author: Date: July 2019

Client Situation

Joanne Reid was enjoying a holiday at Iberostar Costa Dorada in the Dominican Republic when she became seriously ill.

She attended a local hospital, where she was put on an IV drip. She was also treated with Ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic designed to treat bacterial infection. During the same holiday, Joanne’s husband also fell ill.

How We Helped

After returning home to the UK, Joanne got in touch with our team of expert Holiday Illness Claims Solicitors in order to claim compensation from her tour operator First Choice Holidays.

Holiday Claims Lawyer Simon Lomax took on her case and approached First Choice Holidays with the details of her claim. At first, the tour operator said it wasn’t to blame, and it suggested that Joanne had developed a viral illness, or perhaps suffered an allergic reaction to food or a poor diet following a temperature change.

However, Simon said this was implying that the client had eaten or drunk too much during her holiday, even though everything about her symptoms and her treatment suggested bacteria in food.

First Choice also stated that Simpson Millar would have to prove beyond doubt that hotel hygiene standards at the Iberostar Costa Dorada were abnormal for the Dominican Republic.

The Outcome

First Choice eventually admitted defeat and agreed to compensate our client. She was awarded damages of £13,000.
