Latest News April 2013 – We have recently been reading reviews on TripAdvisor regarding an outbreak of illness in March and April 2013. The Hotel, which is currently under the guise of the Luabay Costa Los Gigantes until May 1st has been experiencing hygiene problems. Reports suggest that a large number of children have been struck down with a stomach bug, possibly due to the cleanliness of the swimming pool water.
Other hygiene issues noted include: no hot water in the toilets; dirty glasses; lukewarm food; uncover food exposed to birds; bloody pork; and recycling of food all of which could contribute to food poisoning and illness.

Cryptosporidium is a nasty parasite that causes an infection called cryptosporidiosis which affects thousands of holidaymakers annually. The most common symptoms are profuse stomach cramps and watery diarrhoea, which can be extremely severe in children.
Cryptosporidiosis is most common in children, but it can affect adults. People with weaken immune systems can be seriously affected. Most holidaymakers affected with a healthy immune system will recover within a month provided they drink plenty of fluids and avoid dehydration.
Cryptosporidium is often found in poorly maintained swimming pools especially when there is a problem with the filtration system.

Salmonella bacteria can cause severe bouts of holiday food poisoning, typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever. There are more than 2500 different strains of salmonella but one of the most commonly experienced strains affecting holidaymakers is Salmonella Enteritidis.
Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps and sometimes vomiting and fever. Holidaymakers usually experience Salmonella symptoms for between seven to ten days which often clear up without treatment, but antibiotics can be prescribed to help those holidaymakers severely affected.
Transmission occurs by eating contaminated food, mainly from eggs and poultry, or by faecal contamination from an infected person or animal.
