What are my legal rights if I become ill in the Dominican Republic?

Under the terms of the Package Travel Regulations 1992, the tour operator is responsible for your wellbeing if you've bought a package vacation. The firm must be able to assure you of hotel accommodation that's as hygienic as possible, with little threat of food poisoning or infection from waterborne parasites.

So if you or one of your family suffers food poisoning or other illness at the hotel, the compensation you're entitled to is down to the tour company. And as long as your break in the Dominican Republic was sometime in the last 3 years (or with youngsters 36 months from when a teen turns 18) and your illness was the hotel's fault, you might find you've a strong case.

Food poisoning in Dominican Republic – less dire than it was

Although many used to become ill while away in Dominican Republic, instances of infection have subsided. But we still get lots of queries from tourists telling us about health problems they've had.

Most problems seem to arise from bacterial and parasitic bugs, like Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. Coli, Giardia, Cryptosporidiosis or Dysentery. These are usually the result of food poisoning or unclean swimming pools.

Do these sound familiar? Do you think you've been struck? Contact us for free guidance or email us.
